The United Nations Security Council has been one of the central and principal organs of the UN. Its powers, outlined in the UN Charter, include the establishment of peacekeeping operations, international sanctions, and the authorization of military action. It also has the power to pass legally-binding resolutions and is the primary committee to address matters of international security.
